Paraguay
Paraguay includes broad areas of sedimentary basins and large volcanic provinces, especially basaltic rocks related to the Paraná–Etendeka magmatic event. Those basalts and associated silica-rich zones can yield agate, quartz, and amethyst in cavities and veins.
Geologic snapshot
- Large igneous province: extensive basalt flows in parts of the region
- Silica fillings: agate and quartz can form in vesicles and fractures
- River systems: transport and round durable stones into gravels

basalt agate quartz amethyst chalcedony
Common stones & minerals
- Basalt: dark, fine-grained volcanic rock; may be vesicular
- Agate/chalcedony: banded or translucent silica in cavities and veins
- Amethyst: purple quartz crystals; commonly associated with volcanic-hosted cavities
What to look for
- Agate nodules: rounded pieces with banding on broken surfaces
- Quartz druse: sparkling crystal linings inside cavities
- Basalt host: dark matrix with holes or mineral-filled pockets
