Florida Stones & Coastal Geology

A field-guide style overview of Florida’s carbonate platform—coquina, fossil-rich limestones, and beach-worn textures—plus how to recognize and care for porous coastal stone.

Overview

Florida’s Stone Story

Florida is dominated by carbonate rocks (limestone and dolostone) formed in warm, shallow marine settings. Many surfaces show shells, coral fragments, and subtle layering—clues to changing sea levels and reef environments over time.

What to Look For

Coquina and shell hash

A lightweight, porous limestone packed with shell fragments; often tan to cream with visible shell outlines.

Fossil textures

Coral polyps, mollusk molds, and fossil fragments can appear as repeating patterns or rounded cavities.

Porosity and softness

Many Florida carbonates scratch more easily than igneous rocks and may fizz with weak acid—handle and store with care.
