Mozambique

Mozambique is well known for gem and mineral localities associated with pegmatites and metamorphic terrains in southeastern Africa. Collectors often connect Mozambique with tourmaline and other pegmatite minerals, along with a variety of metamorphic host rocks.

Known for

Stone & mineral context

  • Pegmatite belts: Late-stage granitic melts can form gem-bearing pegmatites with large, well-formed crystals.
  • Metamorphic terranes: High-grade metamorphism contributes to mineral diversity and robust host rocks.
  • Gem rough: Transparent, well-colored crystals are often cut for jewelry or kept as specimens.

Common specimen types

Tourmaline crystals, beryl varieties, quartz and feldspar from pegmatites, and mixed mineral clusters on matrix.

Care notes

Handle crystals carefully to avoid chipping terminations. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners for included or fractured gem rough; use mild soap and water instead.
