Stone & mineral snapshot
India spans ancient cratons, major mountain belts, and vast volcanic provinces. That range supports abundant granite and gneiss, widespread basalt from the Deccan Traps, and well-known building stones including high-quality marble. India is also associated with a long history of gemstone cutting and trade.
Common materials you’ll see
- Granite and related intrusive rocks (dimension stone)
- Gneiss and other metamorphic rocks (durable building stone)
- Basalt (Deccan Traps; dark, fine-grained volcanic rock)
- Marble (notably from Rajasthan; widely used in architecture)
- Sandstone and limestone (regional building stones)
Where these materials come from (high level)
Ancient continental crust contributes granites and high-grade metamorphic rocks, while the Deccan volcanic province contributes extensive basalt flows. Sedimentary basins add limestones and sandstones, and regional metamorphism transforms carbonates into marble.
Collecting & care notes
Polished granites and gneisses are generally low-maintenance. Marble is softer and more acid-sensitive—avoid acidic cleaners and seal when used as tile or countertop.
