Overview

Cape Verde is an Atlantic island nation built largely from volcanic rocks. Basaltic lava flows, volcanic cones, and related intrusive rocks dominate the landscape, creating dramatic stone textures and a strong “volcanic island” signature.

Notable stones & minerals

  • Basalt (lava flows and volcanic edifices)
  • Scoria and volcanic cinders
  • Volcanic tuff and ash deposits (local)
  • Secondary minerals in cavities (local, variable)

Geology & regions (high level)

The islands record multiple volcanic episodes. Weathering and coastal processes produce rounded beach cobbles and sea-cliff exposures that reveal flow banding, vesicles, and other volcanic textures.

Common uses

  • Local construction stone and aggregate (basalt and related rocks)
  • Decorative stone features (where workable blocks occur)
  • Educational/collector samples illustrating volcanic textures

Collecting & ethics notes

Island environments can be sensitive. Avoid collecting from protected coastal zones and parks, and do not remove material from culturally significant sites. For purchases, prefer small, well-documented samples and transparent sourcing.
