Idaho

A field guide to Idaho’s stone and mineral landscape—what to look for, how to describe it, and how to shop responsibly.

Overview

Why Idaho Matters

Idaho sits at the crossroads of volcanic provinces, mountain-building, and river systems that concentrate durable rock types. For collectors and lapidary work, that means a wide range of materials—from volcanic glass and basalts to metamorphic and granitic rocks, plus accessory minerals that show up as well-formed specimens.

What to Look For

Common Idaho Materials

Volcanic rocks

Basalt and related volcanics are widespread; describe texture (aphanitic vs. vesicular), phenocrysts, and any flow banding.

Obsidian and glassy materials

Note luster, fracture (conchoidal), translucency at thin edges, and inclusions—useful for identification and lapidary planning.

Metamorphic and granitic stones

Granite, gneiss, quartzite, and schist show distinctive grain size and foliation; record mineral proportions and fabric direction.
